Benchtime by Anna Janiak Studio
The concept for the bench takes its inspiration from the life-sized astronomical instruments of Jantar Mantar, New Delhi. The instruments provide an unusual playground for the residents of city.
With my proposal I want to introduce a micro playground to the City of London. The bench, when placed in an unshaded area facing North, acts as gnomon, and shows the movement of time throughout the day.
The bold red colour of the bench provides a great contrast to nearby foliage and stone clad buildings.
This bench is one of five new benches across Cheapside and the result of a design competition organised by the London Festival of Architecture, the City of London Corporation and Cheapside Business Alliance. Each bench showcases one of London’s brilliant emerging architects and designers and is a public gift that help the City remain an exceptional place to live, work and visit.
