Up the Elephant

Led by artist and local resident Richard Walker, ‘Up the Elephant’ is a walking tour of Southwark’s Elephant and Castle that features Ernö Goldfinger’s Grade II listed Metro Central Heights (formerly Alexander Fleming House) and the ill-fated 1960s shopping centre amongst others.

Meeting at the Michael Faraday Memorial, this tour not only explores the area’s architectural landscape but also the buildings currently under threat of demolition to make way for redevelopment. What impact could this have on its local communities, including the largest Colombian population in the UK, and how would any ‘gentrification’ negatively impact upon Elephant and Castle’s unique identity?
