In 1917 the Architectural Association moved to its current home in Bedford Square, the same year that it also admitted the first four women to study at the AA. That year and for many years until the Second World War, women were the minority amongst students at the AA which was used to explain the disparity in size between the men’s and women’s toilets in the basement of No. 36 Bedford Square.
There are currently 71 types of gender, yet toilets continue to create an artificial binary. This year, Leticia Dadalto, a student in Diploma School, has gone beyond just correcting this inequality, and instead has erased gendered boundaries by transforming both toilets into gender neutral spaces with several more inclusive options for everyone to use. Visit these spaces and see the collection of artefacts and objects on display as a toolkit for a set of users who are no longer defined by binaries.
