The National Theatre is not one but three auditoriums and there's a clear line between performance space and audience in each. But what if that boundary was removed and the show takes place in a 'found space' instead ? National Theatre: Out of the Box explores the radical staging and design solutions for projects when the Grade 11* listed building was repurposed to give innovative contexts to new work and productions. The event will explore the design ideas including model boxes and plans from the NT Archive followed by a tour of these ephemeral locations, that became the venues The Loft, The Paintframe and The Shed.
By thinking 'out of the box' writers, directors, and audiences were given the chance to engage anew with the surroundings of Lasdun's NT in refreshing and unexpected new ways, breaking the conventional boundaries.
Admission: £15 for Archive session and tour
