Local connections: Borough boundaries

An exhibition of 8 community-led housing projects within the borough of Lewisham, South East London.

As a borough, Lewisham has a culture of successful housing projects led, and even built, by the local community. From Sanford in the 1970's to the Brasted Close homes planned for 2021 in Sydenham, Lewisham people manage to find solutions to housing shortages.

This exhibition presents a variety of projects, all in one part of London.  Each has a personality, a difference in approach that contrasts sharply with the standardised developments where the community have been less involved, or not considered at all. Borough boundaries are a key facet of local authority organisation, decisions are made within specific geographic areas, decisions which affect our lives and choices widely.

What part has this local authority played in these projects? Is the spirit of the community itself a major influence? Or are both important?
