Libraries as Civic Spaces

The new central library Oodi in Helsinki, Finland has attracted worldwide attention for its innovative reinterpretation of the idea of public library. Its maker spaces, team work areas and long opening hours have made it a living room for the people of Helsinki.

How could architecture better serve democracy? What is the role of libraries in citizen activism?

Join us for a debate on libraries as civic spaces. The evening is opened by a panel discussion with Tuula Haavisto, Cultural Director of Helsinki, Antti Nousjoki, Architect of Oodi library, and Sian Norris, feminist activist, founder and director of the Bristol Women's Literature Festival.
