The Giant Dolls House Project aims to make people aware of the importance of a home and
community for all and to celebrate a united diversity. The Giant Dolls House is working with
Oxfam as part of the Stand As One Campaign, Refugee Week and the London Festival of
Architecture. The Giant Dolls house is the initiative of Catja de Haas. A London based architect.
The project team travelled to Jordan with Oxfam where they spent four days working with
Syrian refugees, who were each given a shoe box to work with - a blank space in which to
recreate a special place, a memory, or tell their story to the exhibition visitors. Back in the UK,
children, architects, designers, artists, asylum seekers and visitors to the museum are being set
the same challenge in response to those from Za’atari.
The boxes will be displayed together, linked by ramps and ladders to create a giant dolls’ house.
Each contribution has a story behind it: the volleyball field in Za’atari camp, the wedding dress
or the simple bedroom view. This web of connected spaces and stories breaks down boundaries
by showing that people are equally idiosyncratic with similar dreams and aspirations.
During special workshops, visitors will be encouraged to think with their hands by creating their
own shoe box.
