From Smithfield to Liverpool Street: a walk along the edge of the City

Join SAVE Britain's Heritage on a special walking tour in collaboration with London Festival of Architecture. The boundary between the City of London and the former Metropolitan Borough of Finsbury, now the London Borough of Islington, reveals a fascinating story of how political, administrative and socio-economic boundaries can have a real impact on the built environment.

This walk takes us along Charterhouse Street, with the Corporation’s Smithfield Market buildings on one side and the finer grain of Clerkenwell on the other, through the wonderful post-war Golden Lane Estate, skirting the Barbican, and then along Chiswell Street, past the old Whitbread brewery and Artillery Fields, through to Finsbury Square and the hinterland of Broadgate.

Alec Forshaw, former conservation and planning officer with the London Borough of Islington, will explore how planning priorities, and differing community pressures between two local authorities have shaped the northern edge of the City of London.
