“Boundaries are actually the main factor in space, just as the present, another boundary, is the main factor in time.“ Eduardo Chillida
As part of the 'Building Boundaries & Belvederes' exhibition, Proctor & Matthews invite you to join them for an evening symposium where they will be joined by leading academics, practitioners and researchers for a panel discussion chaired by Timothy Brittain-Catlin.
Over a 30-year exploration of neighbourhood design and identity, Proctor & Matthews Architects has developed a distinctive approach to the depiction of boundaries. Our work has focussed on the definition of settlement edges, articulating the importance of the interface between public and private realms and identifying the thresholds between an inner inhabited and domesticated world and the wild landscape beyond: the moment when boundaries become belvederes.
The definition of space using a simple boundary treatment of natural materials, creates shelter and enclosure within an otherwise open and ‘wild’ landscape. From the depiction of landscape within paintings of the Italian Renaissance to the vernacular forms of rural Britain, the treatment of boundaries has become intertwined with concepts of regional identity and the formal notions of security, protection and detachment.
