BB26. BREAKING BOUNDARIES. THE ARCHITECTURE OF POWER.
Architecture surrounds us all the time. It influences us whether we like it or not. What do you want for your architecture and your City? The development of the city and the UK’s power structure is mapped out physically. Importantly and potently, contemporary issues continue to influence the city’s uses and spaces.
Where a gate may keep us out and those who control it may let us in, the physical presence of gates, walls and squares defines where we can and cannot go and where and how we express ourselves. From peace marches, celebration of war and against war and their memories, what we call democracy and revolution over monarchy are present in the physical layout, buildings and monuments of our cities.
Do you understand the effect that architecture has on our perceptions of authority, civic benevolence, divine right of kings or man’s relationship with his soul? The relationship between private needs and public interest and control has changed, and our approach to the intimate personal and collective experiences and need for humanity is underlined in our institutions. The tour is from Trafalgar Square to Westminster.

Breaking Boundaries Series by Paul Vick architects
Paul Vick architects, Most Innovative Architecture Firm London 2019 and 2018 (AI Awards) brings you four one off events in their Breaking Boundaries series for London Festival of Architecture to explore innovation and what it means for you and your City. The events are located in buildings that Paul Vick has had a close design relationship with. The series gives an intimate picture of how the invisible structures of the work within the building and the visible structures of the architecture where the event is held, together continue to break the boundaries of our perceptions and lives.
Presentations are by practitioners informing on current thinking and challenging us about what we want for the future.
